I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have the constipation problem. My doctor told me today that I can take Dulcolax and Colace. I am not sure about the back pain, you might want to talk to your doctor.

It’s very normal to have constipation in early pregnancy! Give your OBGYN a call to see what you can take without harming your little one :)

No, you cannot take Ex-lax. You can take stool softeners, but not laxatives. I am also 7 weeks and haven’t had the constipation or back pain yet, but I’m sure it’s normal at any stage. Everyone’s different. Maybe I’m too busy throwing up to notice other symptoms…lol.

Constipation is common in pregnancy, and you can take OTC to help with that, also eat better foods in smaller portions more often. Take fiber supplements if you aren’t getting enough fiber in food. Back pain isn’t common this early in pregnancy though. It is when your belly is huge. You should be sleeping really good right now, so this is something that you should talk over with your doctor.

Talk to your doctor before you take anything. Colace is very expensive but there is a generic version and it works VERY well. I would make sure that your breads have at least 3g of fiber in each serving. Make sure you are eating lots of vegetables. Really up the fiber and drink lots of water. Drinking water will also keep you from retaining it.

Some tips for adding fiber are:
Mixing 1/2 white flour with 1/2 whole wheat
When I make pancakes I mix a whole wheat mix with the regular.
Make sure you eat lots of veggies.
South beach diet has a drink mix out with fiber in it and it’s very good.
Keep in mind that just because something says whole wheat or whole grain it may not be. Always check the fiber content.

Try two shot glasses worth of prune juice mixed with a table spoon of melted butter. Only do this procedure once. It takes time but its potent.

And see a chiropractor for your back pain. They won’t hurt the baby and you will definitely notice a difference!

i’m 13 weeks and have had severe back pain, went to the drs and its turned out to be sciatica but yours could be due to constipation.

You need to go see your doctor.

I was having the same issue this past week and I’m just as far along as you. I remembered having that sort of pain before, but couldn’t place it, then it dawned on me what it was! I was starting to get a kidney infection! I quick ran out and got myself some cranberry juice and w/i 24 hrs I felt 110% better! It’s better to catch it now and fix it safely than to wait until you have to take horrible meds! Hope that helps!

Hi ;) well i am reading this book called “what to expect while expecting”..its almost a bible for mama’s to be! But i read it is normal to feel what your feeling!! Don’t worry girl, hang in there, i know its hard. As far as the constipation, drink white grape juice or prune juice, it helps. The book does not recommend any ex-lax or pills..

Constipation is very common during pregnancy because of the increased progesterone that slows down your bowels. I wouldnt take laxatives, stool softeners may be ok, but honestly what works best for me is Benefiber. It’s mixed in any drink, even water, and it doesn’t alter the taste or texture, you don’t even know it’s there, and it’s 100% natural and safe. I was severely constipated before, and would even spot a little after a bowel movement form all the straining, now i have no problems at all. It’s in a green plastic can, and you can get it at Target, wal-mart, the grocery store, or the pharmacy. I just mix the powder in w/ my juice when i take my prenatal, no extra pills needed! :) As far as your back pain, if it’s severe I’d call the doc and find out what’s going on. I know moderate back pain is common in any stage of pregnancy, but sever pain anywhere should be looked into. Good luck & best wishes!!

It is normal to get constipation this early in pregnancy, and it can continue for the whole of your pregnancy. Are you taking Iron supplements for anemia? If so this could be the reason for the constipation. If your not taking iron then it could simply be down to the hormonal changes your body is going through.

I had constipation with the youngest of my 3 children (he’s 6 weeks now),and when I asked my hcp for advice she advised me to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, drink fruit juices such as prune (I tried dried prunes instead) or pure orange juice and to make sure I was getting enough fiber from foods (bran, fruit & veg ect) I did this and it sorted the constipation with out the use of laxatives.
The back pain could be due to stretching of the ligaments or an indication of an urinary tract infection (again something I had with my youngest) and something you should see your hcp about to get it treated if it is an infection, but it’s perfectly normal in pregnancy.

Hope this helps, good luck with the rest of the pregnancy = )

Being pregnant sometimes strains the muscles in the lower back and increases the lumbar curve, this can cause compression in the lumbar spine. Overworked muscles need to be stretched and I know The Back Pro can do that. You use it for the neck and shoulder area if you’re pregnant. It does a great job and can be used during pregnancy and after giving birth. It will also help relax your system which should help with your bowel problem. I wouldn’t take any laxatives if you can get relief naturally. If you use the Back Pro before you go to bed your body will be much more relaxed because it helps with blood flow through your system.

Check out the back pro, it may be just what you need, It worked wonders for me.
